The space

A park that can become anything

This is the park of a summer house built in 1666, right in front of the sea. There is no fixed layout. The open ground is yours to set up as a ceremony, a dinner, a stage or a dance floor.

The story

A summer house since 1666

In the 17th century, wealthy families and officers around Zadar built summer houses on the nearby islands. The one at Preko still carries its date and an inscription that says what it was for: a place to rest.

  1. 1666

    Vuko Crnica builds a retreat

    Vuko Crnica, a colonel in the Venetian army, has the summer house and garden built at Preko. The year is carved on a stone above the garden entrance. The text calls it a delightful place, made at great cost on wild, empty ground.

  2. 1684

    An inventory of the house

    A list of the property mentions a courtyard cistern, an olive mill beside the house, simple furniture and many paintings on the walls. It also lists weapons, a reminder that the coast was not always safe.

  3. 1800s

    The painter’s house

    The house passes to the Zadar painter Franjo Salghetti-Drioli (1811–1877), who adds a floor and cares for the garden, with its laurels, old oaks and tall pines. Locals begin to call it Andriolova kuća, Andriolo’s house. A later writer from Preko recalled nightingales singing in the trees at dawn.

  4. Today

    Andrioli Preko

    The house still faces the sea, and the garden keeps its paved main walk between low walls and its shaded, wooded feel. It is now open to your parties, dinners, festivals and weddings.
